What you will learn
Each class in this lecture series will feature live demonstrations of musical concepts, discussion, and recorded listening examples. These courses will give you tools and context to better appreciate the magical world of music.
Classes meet weekly on Thursday evenings and each four-week section can be taken alone or in conjunction with the rest of the series.
THE GENIUS OF J.S. BACH
MARCH 20 - APRIL 10
This course will explore the incredible genius of J.S. Bach. We will listen to some of his most important works including the Well-Tempered Clavier, St. Matthew Passion, and the Brandenburg Concertos. Through listening and discussion, we will discover some of the reasons Bach has had such a powerful influence on music throughout the ages.
The Magic of Melody
APRIL 24 - MAY 15
This course will highlight great works of music that use melody in the most beautiful and inventive ways. From songs and opera to instrumental music, we will hear how melody has inspired composers from Handel to Cole Porter and beyond. You may even be inspired to sing along!
Music for the Movies
MAY 22 - JUNE 12
Many of us have heard great music in movie soundtracks throughout the years. In this course we will listen to some of the great film composers including John Williams, and we will survey classical composers who have influenced their works such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel. Grab your popcorn and join us in exploring music for the big screen!
